As we push through the last official month of winter, and look forward to spring, try getting out of your comfort zone by trying a few new activities around town. February does tend to be one of the colder months, but that shouldn’t stop you having a few adventures both indoors and out!
Downtown Ice Rink: It’s no secret that Fargo is well-known for its ice rinks. However, as with the majority of the city’s rinks, the very popular and family friendly downtown spot only typically stays open as long as the weather permits. Be sure to grab a friend and a hot drink, and enjoy a few relaxing laps while watching the downtown hustle and bustle while there’s still time. If you haven’t seen the rink already on your commute, it’s located right off Broadway and Main Ave. Open until 9:00pm, the rink runs both weekdays and weekends. Skaters can also enjoy a fire pit to stay warm.
Fargo Park District Events: Check out the Fargo Park District’s website and calendar at FargopPaks.com/events-calendar for a variety of fun and family friendly events scheduled throughout the month of February. Be sure to stop by the Fargo Pond Hockey Classic tournament scheduled for February 11th and 12th at Edgewood Golf Course featuring tents for those looking to stay defrost while the games take place. For those of you looking to get a taste of a family vacation to the Caribbean, be sure to check out Destination Anchor Island, hosted by Fargo South High School on February 4th. The event features games and prizes and runs from 1:00 pm to 5:00pm.
Climbing Wall: Get out of your comfort zone by scaling new heights at the Schlossman YMCA’s 32’ climbing wall at 4243 19th Ave. South. Not only a great workout, the climbing wall is the perfect way to escape the cold and pretend you’re on an outdoor adventure. Drop-ins are welcome so even if you don’t have a membership, you are welcome to purchase a day pass and try the wall. Climbing shoes are available on-site, but be sure to wear comfortable clothes that will allow you to move freely. Introduction to belay is a 75-minute class that will teach you the basics so that you can belay on your own at the Y. It’s also fun to bring a friend! Rock climbing clubs are also available for those in the 7-12 and 10-15 age groups.
Cross country Skiing: Edgewood Golf Course also offers a range of winter activities, including cross country skiing, snowshoe rentals and a sliding hill. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available on site during chalet hours from $5.75 for youth rentals and $11.50 for adults. The clubhouse also features a snack bar and a fireplace for those wanting to warm up after a run. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 12:00 – 6:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 – 8:00 pm. Sleigh rides are also available starting January 7 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Other cross-country ski trails also include Forest River, Orchard Glen, but be sure to check the Fargo Parks District web page at FargoParks.com for more information. You can also check out snowshoe and full rental ski packages for individuals and families available at MB Johnson Park in Moorhead until February 26th. All trails are weather dependent.
