One of Fargo’s newer additions to the dining scene is the Green House Café. Open since August, the café is centrally located on 68 Broadway, taking the place of the previously successful Scratch Sandwich and Deli Co. Unlike its predecessor, the Green House Café offers its foodies what ten years ago would have been rare to find in Fargo, and still is in North Dakota: vegan cuisine.

Why try vegan? If you’re not ready to take the plunge and go full vegan, the dishes served here are so robust and flavorful, they won’t have you missing the meat at all. In fact, most of their dishes even feature a meat replacement ingredient such as seitan, which is a protein derived from wheat (not for those who want to avoid gluten), or chick’n, a soy and gluten based chicken substitute, as well as vegan chorizo. It’s a great way to add a little bit of variety to your diet especially in the longer winter months when we need extra greens and vitamins.

Brunch: The Café offers a number of tried and true favorites for brunch such delicious original, banana, or chocolate chip pancakes that can also be made gluten free upon request. The Café also offers other brunch options such as the tofu scramble served with veggies and vegan sausage, comforting oatmeal, and French toast with coconut and maple syrup. Another hearty dish includes biscuits and gravy, which is sure to get you through the colder months ahead.

Lunch: For lunch, the Café offers a selection of sandwiches and a vegan burger featuring a delicious aioli sauce, which also makes an appearance in the Roasted Chickpea sandwich. Try a vegan Philly sandwich made with seitan and a seitan gyro sandwich or go for the bowls which can be made gluten free upon request. The Hawaiian Bowl made with smoked vegan ham and pineapple, the Orange Chik’n and the Thai bowl, featuring fried tofu crispy chow mein and peanut sauce will be pleasant surprises. Also available are a variety of sides such as Cajun fries, chips and salsa, and fresh fruit. Salads with red beets or roasted squash are also a great option for those looking for a lighter and healthier selection. Soups are chef’s choice (such as the pumpkin curry soup).

Dinner: If you are looking for a delicious appetizer to kick off your dinner, try the Citrus Bruschetta or Veggie Kabobs featuring seasonal vegetables in a balsamic seasoning or the Tempura Veggies. Entrees include tacos made with chipotle aioli or try the Sweet Potato Plantain Croquettes: mashed sweet potatoes and plantains (a fruit related to the banana) that are spiced and fried. More comfort food includes the Chicken and Chorizo Paella or coconut rice with vegetables and vegan chicken and sausage. The Café also offers a kid’s menu with grilled peanut butter and jelly, vegan macaroni and cheese and vegan chicken nuggets which are sure to be a favorite.

Dessert: You can’t skip dessert! The Green House Café offers a range of desserts prepared by Lucid Bakery, newly opened vegan bakery located nearby at 68 Broadway #101. Try the Vanilla Almond cupcakes, Peanut Butter Oatmeal cookies, or White Chocolate Cranberry cupcakes. Gluten free options are also available

To Take Along for Later: The Green House Café also features in house jams and jellies, such as Pumpkin Butter, Orange Cranberry Relish or Maple Apple Butter served in mason jars and ready to go.

Reasonably priced under with all options under $10, Green House Café is currently open Monday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and closed on Sunday.
